NPFL 25: Matthew secures vital win for Sunshine Stars against Akwa United

A lone goal from newly promoted Sunshine Stars Under-19 player, Samuel Matthew, earned the Owena Whales a crucial victory over Akwa United in their Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) matchday 24 encounter at Remo Stars Stadium, Ikenne, Ogun State.

The tense match began with both sides showcasing impressive football skills to the delight of spectators. Sunshine Stars missed several scoring opportunities before Samuel Matthew found the back of the net from a Waheed Adebayo square pass in the 29th minute. This marked Matthew’s second goal in as many NPFL home matches for the club.

Michael Olalusi, returning to the squad after more than a year on the sidelines, played a key role in stabilising Sunshine Stars’ midfield, ensuring their defence remained unexposed.

Akwa United, led by former Sunshine Stars coach Kennedy Boboye, fought hard to equalise but were effectively neutralised by the home team’s solid backline. Despite Sunshine Stars dominating the pace of the game, they failed to extend their lead, with Akwa United’s defence holding firm.

Post-match, Sunshine Stars head coach Bobola Akinfolarin praised his players for following instructions, stating that the win would boost their confidence.

“We had a clean sheet and secured maximum points today because we thoroughly reviewed our defensive lapses and worked on them. It paid off, and we won’t stop until we improve further,” Akinfolarin said.

The victory is expected to uplift Sunshine Stars’ morale as they continue their NPFL campaign.
