NPFL MD 14: Sunshine ride on Awosanmi’s back for Rivers United draw

Super Eagles Team B invitee, Promise Awosanmi, salvaged a point for Sunshine Stars in a Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) matchday 14 tie at the Otunba Dipo Dina Stadium, Ijebu Ode.

The Sunshine Stars prodigy nodded the ball into the far-left corner of the net from Yusuf Olowoshile’s cross in the 60th minute, cancelling out Timothy Zacharia’s early goal.

Zacharia had put Rivers United ahead in the 3rd minute of the pulsating encounter, benefiting from a defensive mix-up.

The Akure-based side shrugged off the early goal conceded with renewed energy and attacking instinct to secure an equaliser.

Earlier, Stephen Chukwude was fouled inside the penalty box, but the centre referee was not convinced enough to award a spot kick to the home team.

The Bobola Akinfolarin-tutored side continued their hunt for an equaliser, which eventually came in the 60th minute through Awosanmi’s header.

There were no further goals in the remainder of the encounter, as both teams shared the spoils.

Akinfolarin commended his side for not allowing the early goal to weigh them down.

According to him, Sunshine Stars’ focus is now on the away game against Katsina United.

He added that the Nigeria Premier Football League is improving rapidly to the extent that any team can win anywhere.

Rivers United coach, Finidi George, lamented his side’s inability to convert the several goal-scoring chances they created in the first half.

“Had we converted our chances, maybe the outcome of the result would have been different,” he said.
