NPFL25: Sunshine Stars bow to fate after home defeat to Tornadoes

Sunshine Stars head coach, Bobola Akinfolarin, on Sunday conceded that victory in his side’s away match against Elkanemi Warriors of Maiduguri would not be enough to save his team from relegation to the lower league next season.

Akinfolarin stated this after the Owena Whales lost 1-2 to visiting Niger Tornadoes at their makeshift home ground, Dipo Dina Stadium, Ijebu Ode.

According to him, “The match against Elkanemi is just a formality.

“We are only going there to honour the game and see what the management will decide after the match.”

Sunshine Stars have won 11 matches, lost 18, and drawn 8 out of 37 games, accumulating 41 points.

Sunshine Stars, who were in desperate need of three points, conceded the first goal in the first half before Liman Ahmadu equalised for the Owena Whales.

Unfortunately, Sunshine Stars conceded another goal in the second half, which eventually handed the visitors all three points and boosted their chances of surviving relegation.

Sunshine Stars will play their last game of the 2024/25 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season away to Elkanemi Warriors of Maiduguri.
