A Nutritionist, Mr Dele Adeosun has described unripe plantain as food loaded with numerous essential minerals and vitamins that offer complete protection from eye problems.
Adeosun stated this in an interview with The Hope in Ondo city, saying the medical practitioners have long approved it for the treatment of various ailments, because of the nutrients in it.
He noted that nutrients such as fibre, potassium, iron, magnesium, manganese, vitamin B complex make the body healthy when taken.
According to him, plantain flour is lower in calories than regular all-purpose flour, because this versatile crop is low in fat,” adding that its low-fat content makes it perfect for people suffering from cholesterol-related ailments like diabetes and obesity.
The nutritionist further added that unripe plantain is very low in sugar compared to ripe or overripe plantain and this made it a good choice for diabetes patient especially when added with other fibre and protein rich food such as green vegetables.
He said that unripe plantain contains properties that help the eye see more clearly and even for a better complexion.
Adeosun noted that a combination of unripe plantain with spices like ginger, garlic and onions was good for high blood pressure, kidney problems & ulcer patients.
He stressed the need that the starch in unripe plantain helps to decrease acidity and reduce irritation in the body, also used in herbal medicine to soothe urinary tract infections, treat sluggish bowels, skin infections, heal wounds among others.
Adeosun added that plantains ease the discomfort associated with the menstrual period and also prevent bladder problems.
According to him, the folates in plantain are essential for a healthy pregnancy, improve heart function and boost fertility if consumed moderately.
He affirmed that the food protect against anaemia and neuritis, said the iron component in it was effective in boosting blood levels in the body.
