Nigerians have been warned against consuming poorly preserved food and drinks, especially those stored under the sun as it could cause serious health complications and food poisoning.
A nutritionist, Mrs Adunola Sunday stated this in an interview with The Hope saying some foods items like milk, yoghurt, drinking water and other foods items are dangerous to health when exposed to the Sun.
According to her, some foods like milk, yoghurt and water consumption were often encouraged because of their nutritional benefits, consuming those stored under the sun, as commonly found in local shopping marts and on the streets across the country could be very dangerous.
The nutritionist stressed that consuming improperly stored food items could be detrimental to the health, adding that those drinking them were at serious risk of food poisoning.
According to her, food poisoning contained toxin, chemical or infectious agent like a bacterium, virus, parasite among others that may cause adverse symptoms in the body.
She noted that symptoms of food poisoning affect mostly the gastrointestinal tract causing vomiting or diarrhoea or they may involve other organs such as the kidney, brain, or muscle.
Mrs Sunday added that the right way of storing yoghurts, milk, water and some food items both commercially and at home was by storing them at a cold temperature, noting that leaving them out in the sun gives room for toxic microorganisms to grow and multiply in them.
