Former Sunshine Queens captain, Taiwo Ajibade, shone in her debut for Rivers Angels, contributing to the winning goal in the 2024/25 Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) opener.

Ajibade, who was introduced in the 65th minute of the match at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium, was fouled at the edge of the box while attempting to chest past  an oncoming Ibom Angels defender.

Ifeoma Ikenokwalu capitalised on the resultant free kick, scoring the winning goal for the Jewels of Rivers to secure a 2-1 victory over Ibom Angels.

In a chat with Sporting Hope, Ajibade described her debut as a dream come true, expressing delight at donning the colours of the Port Harcourt-based club.

She said: “I was very excited and full of confidence when the coach asked me to come in.

“When I entered, I cheered the players on and told them we were going to win. To the glory of God, we won.

“My target for Rivers Angels is to finish top of our group, win the Super Six, and play in the CAF Women’s League competition.

“I will continue to give my best to the team whenever I’m selected to play,” she added.

In his post-match interview, Rivers Angels coach, Tosan Blankson praised his team’s determination after securing maximum points against the visiting Ibom Angels in the league opener.

Blankson expressed confidence that the victory had put his side in a strong position for Super Six qualification, highlighting the importance of starting the season with a win.

“In every first match, you have to give your best and do everything possible to get the three points. The girls did that today,” Blankson said.

Commenting on a key tactical decision, Blankson explained why he kept a particular player on the pitch despite her struggles in possession.

“With the ball, she’s not too good, but without the ball, she’s excellent.

“We used her strength to complement the team,” he stated.

The coach acknowledged that his side struggled to impose their usual style, adapting instead to Ibom Angels’ physical and direct approach.

“Our players aren’t used to kicking the ball anyhow. They were more physical, which gave them an advantage. But we’ll work on transitioning better in the next match.”

Blankson assured fans that Rivers Angels would improve as the season progresses, taking each game step by step.
