NWFL launches weekly star match broadcast on TV

The Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) is embarking on a transformative journey under its forward-thinking leadership, aimed at boosting sponsorships and revolutionising women’s football in Nigeria.

The 2024/2025 NWFL Premiership kicks off with an exciting Week 1 Star Match between reigning champions Edo Queens and Abia Angels at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City. The match is scheduled for Wednesday, 15 January 2025, at 6 PM and will be broadcast live on NTA Sports 24 and StarTimes, showcasing the league’s commitment to enhancing visibility for women’s football.

NWFL Chairperson Nkechi Obi highlighted the league board’s dedication to innovation, stating, “We are determined to create a league that is both competitive and commercially viable. The introduction of live broadcasts and floodlight matches is a step toward making the NWFL a household name across Nigeria and beyond.” She added that fans could look forward to weekly televised star matches, designed to highlight the exceptional talent within women’s football and attract broader support to elevate the game.

The league’s new strategy includes weekly star matches broadcast live on TV and the introduction of floodlight matches, aimed at enhancing the matchday atmosphere and viewing experience for fans. These initiatives are geared towards increasing the league’s visibility, attracting investments, and inspiring the next generation of female footballers.

By focusing on building a commercially viable and globally recognised league, the NWFL is setting a new standard for women’s football in Africa.
