NWFL super six: Nasarawa Amazons, Bayelsa Queens, Remo Stars ladies win opening games

Nasarawa Amazons, Bayelsa Queens and Remo Stars Ladies all won their opening game at the 2025 Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) super six playoffs at Remo Stars Stadium, Ikenne Ogun State.

A Tsebee Rita goal in the 13th minute gave Ratels a shocking lead before Amazons main woman, Janet Akekoromowei with her 10th goal of the season drew them level.
However, the winner came in the 55th minute via Josephine Mathias’ header from a corner kick.
While Bayelsa Queens claimed a bragging rights in the South-South derby, defeating Rivers Angels 1-0 in a fiercely contested encounter defined by a moment of magic and a goalkeeping masterclass.
The Prosperity Girls took the lead in the 34th minute when winger Alaba Obabiyi rifled in a long-range thunderbolt that left the Rivers Angels goalkeeper rooted to the spot.
Rivers Angels had the chance to draw level late in the first half after being awarded a penalty, but Bayelsa shot-stopper Monle Omini denied Ifeoma Ikenokwalu with a full-stretch save.
Omini’s brilliance continued in the second half, as she pulled off multiple saves to preserve her side’s slender advantage.
The victory solidifies Bayelsa Queens’ ambitions for a fourth league crown and leaves Rivers Angels with much to ponder heading into Matchday Two.
Meanwhile,the youthful hosts Remo Stars Ladies buoyed by an energetic home crowd, showcased tactical discipline and composure against a more experienced Edo side. For much of the game, chances were few and far between until the 88th minute when substitute Olasubomi Ogundele capitalized on a defensive lapse to fire in the winner and send the stadium into a frenzy.
Edo Queens pushed for an equalizer in the dying minutes but failed to break down the resolute Remo Stars defence. The result hands the newcomers a dream start to their campaign while dealing an early blow to the champions’ title defence.
After Matchday One, Nasarawa Amazons, Bayelsa Queens, and Remo Stars Ladies sit atop the table with three points apiece, while Naija Ratels, Rivers Angels, and Edo Queens are yet to get off the mark.
Sunday, May 11 is designated a rest day, providing teams a breather before the second round of fixtures today, Monday May 12.
