Chairman of Nigeria Union of Teachers NUT, Ondo State chapter, Comrade Victor Amoko has advised teachers in the state who are yet to obtain the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria TRCN license to do so since it is the yardstick to measure professionalism.

Registrar of TRCN in Nigeria, Prof Josiah Ajiboye recently disclosed that 300,000 teachers in both public and private schools across the country are not qualified because they do not possess the TRCN license.

Amoko who gave the advice during an interview with The Hope, said there is a law that stipulates that anyone who does not have the TRCN licence is not a qualified teacher.

According to him, TRCN, the body that is saddled with the responsibility of classifying who is qualified or not in teaching profession is universally accepted which NUT is part of.

“A university degree is not enough for you to practice as a lawyer without going to the Law School. Likewise your degree without housemanship and induction cannot qualify you to practice as a medical doctor.

“So in teaching profession, you are not a qualified teacher without the licence of the TRCN. For you to register, you will write the examination, you will be given questions relating to the profession and if you pass, you will be given the licence.

Amoko said a time is coming when the licence will be a yardstick for recruiting teachers and for their promotion.

While saying teachers in public schools from primary level to university are obtaining the licence, he fingered private schools’ proprietors as those behind recruitment of unqualified teachers.

Amoko who said education is the foundation of all professions, noted that it is too important to be left in the hands of unqualified people.

He said the role of ensuring that only qualified teachers are teaching both in public and private schools lies with government and TRCN.

“Most of the proprietors of private schools are those hiring unqualified teachers because they are not ready to pay good salaries. I know that by the time one of them is made a scape goat, they will adjust,” he said.
