ODHA seeks resumption of academic activities in institutions

The Ondo State House of Assembly Committee on Tertiary Institutions, has expressed worry over the suspension of academic activities in some tertiary institutions in the state, saying that urgent steps must be taken for the institutions to reopen for academic session.

The Chairman of the Committee, Mr. Gudiubankole Felemu, gave the expression during the inspection tour of the Committee ‘s members to the State University of Science and Technology, Okitipupa.

He said the situation is giving the committee concern due to the several petitions it has received over the issue.

Felemu, who led the other members of the committee urged the management of the institution to fasttrack effort to ensure that students resume their academic session.

According to him, the state government and the management of the institution need to discuss to map out strategies on how to manage the institution.

The Chairman also expressed concern over the challenges facing the OSUSTECH in terms of infrastructure and charged the institution on the need to carry along the State Oil Producing Area Development Commission to improve in the area of infrastructure for the institution.

The committee emphasized the need for the institution to improve on its accreditation of courses, partnership with international institutions, students strength and find lasting solution to the issue of salary payment.

Responding, the Vice Chancellor of the institution, Prof. Sunday Ogunduyile, said steps are being taken to reopen the institution for students to continue their academic studies

Ogunduyile, explained that the school fee levied on the students is appropriate as it was agreed upon by the management and students that the payment of the increment in the school fee would start from 100 level students without affecting 200 level upward when the increment started.

He enumerated hostel accommodation, lecture theatre among other facilities as challenges facing the OSUSTECH and therefore appealed to the committee and the state government to intervene.

Ogunduyile noted that the management of the institution is taking a bold step in collaborating with Institution of Marine in foreign country to enhance students success in marine course.
