Power of supremacy is brewing between the Ondo State House of Assembly and the State branch of the Nigerian Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE), over constitutional right.

The power tussle which has led to the suspension of all activities of the union by the Assembly, an action which was yesterday rebuffed by NULGE as illegal.

The House at its plenary presided over by the Speaker, Mr. Bamidele Oleyelogun clamped down an immediate suspension of all activities of the union until a contrary directive is given by the parliament.

By this order, the lawmakers directed NULGE executives headed by the new President, Comrade Bola Taiwo, to vacate the union’s secretariat pending the outcome of the investigation by the Ad-hoc committee set up by the Assembly to investigate a petition against the union’s leadership.

The indefinite suspension which was a unanimous decision of the hallowed chambers was sequel to the petition written to the Assembly by aggrieved NULGE members against the new president of the union, Comrade Bola Taiwo.

Oleyelogun, who read the Save Our Soul (SOS) letter on the floor of the House to other members, explained that the directive became necessary to avoid breakdown of law and order in the union and the state.

According to the petition, the bye-election of the new president was held in flagrant disobedience to the extant law and therefore should not be allowed to stand.

The Assembly immediately set up a Ad-hoc Committee on Ethics and Privileges headed by the House Majority Leader, Jamiu Maito, to investigate the petition in the interest of peace and harmony.

The House thereafter ordered the immediate suspension of all activities of the union including collection of cheque off dues pending the outcome of the investigation by the Ad-hoc Committee.

Earlier in his contribution, the Majority Leader of the House, Jamiu Maito, emphasised that it is necessary for members to rise to the situation in order to avert possible crisis in the union.

He also said all members involved should be invited to the hallowed chambers for questioning.

On his part, the Chairman, House Committee on Finance and Appropriation, Sunday Olajide, who described the matter as very important and sensitive also called for proper investigation of the petition to ensure peace and security of members.

But in a swift reaction, the new NULGE President, Comrade Taiwo said the House has no power to suspend their activities, adding that only the National Assembly has such power.

He accused the aggrieved members of taking internal matters of the union to the House, saying the union is capable of resolving its internal wrangling.

Also at plenary, the House unanimously committed the Implementation of Medium Term Fiscal Framework (MTFF) and Fiscal Strategy Paper (FSP) to the Ad-hoc Committee on Finance and Appropriation headed by Sunday Olajide, for proper scrutiny.

Sunday Olajide noted that the FSP which is a multi-year budget from 2018 to 2020 is for the development and progress of the state.

He moved a motion to commit the paper to the Committee on Finance and Appropriation for necessary actions. This was seconded by Jamiu Maito.

The Speaker of the House, Bamidele Oleyelogun described the paper as very important, saying that it would give room for continuity and ensure good governance in the state.
