Ondo State House of Assembly yesterday tasked the Management of the State Ministry of Environment and other sister agencies to work as a team and put in place Flood Risk Management Strategy.
The House Committee on Petroleum, Environment, Bitumen, and Energy gave the task during its oversight visit to the State Ministry of Environment, Waste Management Board, NEWMAP, and State Ministry of Regional lntegration and Special Duties.
The Committee led by its Chairman, Oluwole Ogunmolasuyi charged them to be proactive and enforce environmental law of the state.
The Committee emphasized on developing proper work plan and capacity building of staff to be able to achieve desired goal.
They said that the sector is very important to the State, and promised to continue to give legislative backing to achieve the set mandate.
Members encouraged the Ministry and Agencies on properly waste management and recycling and do more public enlightment of the populace on the danger posed and penalty of contravening environmental law.
On the issue of flooding, they noted that all necessary measures must be taken to prevent future occurrence, including proper feasibility study, while sustainability of projects is key.
Earlier, the Permanent Secretary of the State Ministry of Environment, Akin Asaniyan disclosed that they have recently develop a master plan, involving all sectors of governance for effective service delivery.
While promising that the Ministry would continue to do the needful, he sought for the support of the committee to tackle environmental challenges.
Also, the General Manager, Ondo State Waste Management Authority, Mrs Ayo Adeyemo noted the agency has been mandated by the assembly to do more in the discharge of it duty and would work towards it.
She promised that efforts of the state government at keeping the state neat will never be sabotaged by any unpatriotic resident.
