ODHA wants stringent punishment for kidnappers

Ondo State House of Assembly has decried the level of insecurity in the state and Nigeria as a whole just as it resolved that existing law on anti- kidnapping should be amended to accommodate robust and strict  punishment.

At a plenary sitting presided over by the Speaker, Mr Bamidele Oleyelogun, the House commiserated with the Afenifere leader, Pa Reuben Fasoranti on the death of his daughter, Mrs Funke Olakunori who was assassinated last week Friday.

Moving a motion that the existing law on anti-kidnapping should be amended to accommodate stringent punishment, the Deputy Speaker of the house, Mr Ogundeji Iroju noted that security of lives and properties of the citizens are in the hand of the government. The motion was seconded by the majority leader of the House, Mr Jamiu Maito.

The Speaker therefore ruled that the law should be revisited and amended.

During the debate on insecurity by the lawmakers, the majority leader, Jamiu Maito said the level of kidnapping and killings why  alarming and worrisome as people could no longer sleep with their two eyes closed, saying that it is time to find lasting solution to the ugly trend.

In his submission, a lawmaker representing Odigbo constituency ll called for rejuvenation of local hunters, vigilante groups, OPC, Agbekoya and others, while the security agents should be proactive and man all  check points, adding that all stakeholders must look inward to protect lives.

Also speaking, a lawmaker representing Okitipupa constituency I, Akinrogunde Akintomide stressed the need to return the country to true federalism.

The House condemned in its entirety, the killings and kidnapping of innocent souls in the state, calling on government at all levels to do more to tackle all forms of criminality .

The legislators  called on traditional rulers in the state to protect their domain while the security agents must be alive to their duties.

The lawmakers also said the security trust fund should be forwarded to the house without further delay while unlawful migrant should be disallowed.

Consequently, twenty-nine standing committees were constituted for the smooth running of the activities of the Ninth Assembly.

The speaker mandated all ministries, departments and Agencies MDA’s to comply and cooperate with the committees in the discharge of their duties.

The speaker directed all the committees to always report their activities to the house.
