ODIEC nullifies Ondo West chairmanship poll over logo mix-up, reschedules for January 19

By Jubril Bada

The Ondo State Independent Electoral Commission (ODIEC) has cancelled the chairmanship election in Ondo West Local Government due to an error involving the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) logo on the ballot paper.

The commission revealed that the ballot paper displayed an outdated version of the NNPP logo, necessitating the rescheduling of the election to Sunday, January 19, to uphold credibility and fairness.

Dr. Joseph Aremo, the State Chairman of ODIEC, announced the development during a press briefing at the commission’s headquarters in Akure, the state capital.

He confirmed that the commission identified the use of the old NNPP logo on the ballot paper and noted that the party had formally raised concerns about the matter.

“The new logo of the party was approved late last year, and the process was ongoing. It is not as if we just started. We could have expected the party to draw our attention to the discrepancy earlier,” Aremo explained.

He assured that the chairmanship election in Ondo West Local Government will now take place on Sunday between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m., with the corrected logo, featuring the new red design, appearing on the ballot paper.

Aremo added that no similar complaints were received from other local government areas. Field officers’ reviews confirmed that the issue was exclusive to Ondo West.

Acknowledging that the NNPP could have flagged the discrepancy earlier, Aremo said preparations for the election had been ongoing since last year when the party’s new logo was approved. However, the commission acted promptly to preserve the integrity of the electoral process.

The rescheduled election will proceed as planned, and ODIEC assured voters that all logistical arrangements will be finalised before polls open.

Responding to concerns about the potential delay in announcing results, Aremo clarified that results from other councils will not be affected and will be announced as they are received. He further stated that collation of results will commence tomorrow, January 19, at 9 a.m.

The commission called on residents of Ondo West to remain peaceful and actively participate in the upcoming election, reaffirming its dedication to conducting a free, fair, and transparent process. “This decision ensures that all political parties have equal opportunities in the process,” Aremo concluded.
