Ondo State Independent Electoral Commission, ODIEC, has rescheduled the local government election to July 13 against the February 17 earlier declared.

The Chairman, Dr Igbekele Aremo declared this during stakeholders’ meeting with political parties at its secretariat in Akure.

He said the commission did not cancel the election but rescheduled it because most of the political parties did not conform with the guidelines to be followed before the election can be conducted.

Aremo said:” Election is a process, but when a process is skipped, it will affect the whole process.

The commission is just an umpire that ensures that election is conducted in a manner that is free, fair and credible and not interested in any party winning.

” We can only conduct elections when guidelines and enabling laws are followed. When all these are done, the election will be conducted and the outcome will reflect the mind of the electorate”.

The commission’s chairman therefore, called on all political parties who have not done the needful to do so as there is ample of time for them to do so.

According to him: “As at today, we are ready to conduct the election but for political parties that are not ready, they should do the needful We are not interested in postponing, all we are interested in is free, fair and credible election that counts” he said.

One of the stakeholders, the Chairman, Young People’s Party,(YPP), Mr Dotun Ojon said ODIEC should go beyond words and show to the people that they are ready for the election, adding that there should be voters enlightenment and  believability of the people in the commission .
