The Ondo State Independent Electoral Commission, ODIEC, will today Wednesday hold a stakeholders’ meeting ahead of the 2020 Local Government election in the state.

At the meeting, a date is expected to be picked by the stakeholders for the conduct of the election into the Councillorship and Chairmanship positions.

Speaking with The Hope on telephone yesterday, the ODIEC Chairman, Professor Yomi Dinakin, disclosed that the stakeholders’ meeting was to give an update about the plan and the preparedness of the Commission to conduct the poll.

According to Prof Dinakin, the Commission would seek opinions of the stakeholders on the election before making relevant announcements.

The chairmanship/councillorship election could not hold as planned in 2019 due to some challenges.

However, the ODIEC boss yesterday said the Commission seemed to have overcome those challenges and it is ready to go ahead with the council poll in the new year 2020.

The ODIEC Chairman added that the stakeholders are expected to freely express their opinions and make contributions at the meeting today for the smooth conduct of the poll.

According to the law, 90 days notice must be given to stakeholders before the conduct of the election.

Investigations by The Hope revealed that although no date has been picked, April 18, 2020 may be agreed upon by stakeholders for the conduct of the poll.
