ODSG inaugurates committee to regularise veterinary activities

By Fatima Muraina

The Ondo State Government has inaugurated a committee to regulate and register veterinary practices through the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry.

The initiative aims to strengthen public health by identifying, inspecting, registering, regulating, and sanctioning veterinary premises to eliminate quackery.

In a statement issued and signed by the Head of Publicity and Media Relations of the Ministry, Mr Sola Omoboyowa, the mandate of the committee is to ensure that all veterinary practices are registered and regulated to maintain standards.

It will also conduct regular inspections to ensure compliance with set standards and take action against unregistered or unqualified veterinary practitioners.

The statement described the initiative as crucial, noting that most diseases originate from animals, and veterinarians play a vital role in public health.

The committee’s efforts, it further stated, will help prevent the spread of diseases and promote animal health and welfare.

Speaking during the inauguration of the committee at his office in Akure, Ondo State Commissioner for Agriculture and Forestry, Chief Olayato Aribo, represented by Permanent Secretary Mrs Foluke Tunde-Daramola, emphasised the importance of public health, noting that most diseases originate from animals.

Chief Aribo charged the committee to approach their task with diligence, considering it a call to serve. He also highlighted the crucial role veterinarians play in promoting public health, stating that their contributions cannot be overstated.

Dr Adebayo Ehinmowo, Chairman of the committee and Director of Veterinary Services, urged members to support the government in strengthening public health and eliminating quackery in the profession.

He expressed gratitude to the state government, through the Ministry, for inaugurating the committee in line with the Veterinary Council of Nigeria’s (VCN) quality assurance mandate to sanitise the profession.

In a separate event, the Ministry, through the Department of Veterinary Services, honoured retired officials Mr Adegboyega Loto, Mr Francis Ologun, and Mrs Aderonke Ajileye with gifts in recognition of their meritorious service to the State Government.
