ODSG moves to curb flooding

Ondo State Government has put measures in place to ensure that incidence of flooding is being put under check in order .

It would be recalled that NIMET few days ago listed Ondo state among the states in Nigeria that will experience impeding flooding especially in September.

Commissioner for Environment, Mr. Sunday Akinwalire disclosed this while speaking with The Hope yesterday in Akure.

According to him, each senatorial district has been provided with at least one amphibious excavator for proper channelization of water courses to prevent flooding which according to him has been in use.

He explained that government has also employed the services of a contractor, ZL Global Alliance Plc to handle flooding through a programme called ‘operation flush flood’.

Speaking extensively, Akinwalire said that “we have action plans and implementation strategy to cover all areas to ensure that incident of flooding are reported to the Ministry which we put in our work plan for effective implementation by the contractor in charge.

“In the coastal areas, we are attending to the ills especially the sea incursion in Aiyetoro. We have made case with the World Bank and  steps have been taken to address it.”

While noting that there has been visit to most flash points in Akure the state capital and effective work carried out where necessary, the commissioner assured of coverage of the other areas not only in Akure but also other Local Government Areas in the state.

While stressing the need for proper usage of the environment by residents, he charged then on the need to embrace proper waste management adding that they should desist from illegal dumping of waste especially in water ways.

However, he called on the people to maintain healthy environment not just to prevent flooding but also outbreak of diseases.
