ODSG to establish entrepreneurship in Education Ministry

As part of efforts to enshrine skills acquisition and vocational studies in secondary schools in the state, the Ondo State Government will create an Entrepreneurship Department in the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology.
The Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Ondo State, Mr Laolu Akindolire, dropped the hint while playing host to the facilitator of the Multi-Skill Teenpreneurship Programme, MSTP, Mr Wale Akinyanmi and his team.
The team was at the office of the Commissioner to brief him on the progress and prospect of the Multi Skill Teenpreneurship Programme MSTP, a vocational skills acquisition programme currently being implemented in nine selected secondary schools across the three Senatorial Districts of the state.
The programme was facilitated by the Chief Executive Officer of MSTP, Mr. Wale Akinyanmi, in partnership with LEND-A-HAND-INDIA (LAHI), a multi-foundation based in India to equip secondary school students with multiple entrepreneurial skills for greater employability opportunities and self-reliance while undergoing their normal academic programmes
The Commissioner while lauding the initiative, said it was high time the government changed the mindset of the school children by equipping them with the necessary skills and knowledge needed to start their businesses and as well preparing them for the workforce and enhancing their employability prospects.
Mr Akindolire said the new department to be created in the ministry would focus mainly on skill acquisition and vocational training for school children in the state, adding that the state government was ready to partner with any organization or body in that area.
He said a memo to that effect would soon be sent to Mr Governor for approval, expressing hope that the state Governor, Lucky Orimisan Ayedatiwa has a burning passion for the educational development of the state, especially about programmes that can help in decongesting the labour market by making the young minds self-reliant and employers of labour.
The Commissioner explained further that the state through the new department would focus on provoking and reawakening the entrepreneurial skills in the children early enough and ginger them to indulge in vocational activities while undergoing their normal educational programmes.
“Our focus is to address the mindset of our children that education is more than just acquiring the paper qualifications alone.
“We want to give them a holistic education that seeks to engage all aspects of the learner, including mind, body, and spirit, and provide for them the opportunity to explore and develop their unique interests, talents, strengths and skills. This will further shape their choice of career in life,” the said.
The facilitator of MSTP, Akinyanmi, said the success of the pilot project relies strongly on assuming ownership of the programme, collaboration and partnership with various stakeholders.
