Ondo state government has commenced training on coding and robotics, mobile application development, artificial intelligence and machine learning for some selected secondary schools students and ICT teachers in the state.

The training programme, organised by the state Ministry of Education, Science and Technology in collaboration with NINFOTECH Limited, will take place in the three senatorial districts of the state.

Declaring the training open at Oyemekun Grammar School in Akure, the State Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Mr. Olufemi Agagu said the aim of the training was to “motivate the intelligent problem-solving behavior among learners using ICT software and hardware infrastructure. It is in particular to encourage interest in Science, Technology and Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).

“The idea, therefore, is to improve the technological expertise of our teachers. This is because this will open up learners to many opportunities in technology”.

The Commissioner added that it was important to continuously update and upgrade the knowledge base of teachers and students and to enhance education service delivery in the state.

He further said that the state government was keen on preparing learners in the public schools for the expected changes in the future; whether personal, professional or educational.

The Commissioner said Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu was determined to revolutionise the IT industry in the state through provision of digital knowledge and human capital development that will promote self-reliance, career opportunities and development in the state.

Meanwhile, Agagu revealed that the state government has developed a policy document on Information and Communication Technology in Education to position the sector in line with global best practices in education, saying a copy would be made available to both public and private primary and secondary schools in the state.

Earlier, the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Mrs. Lola Amuda said the training would promote ICT skills, artificial intelligence learning and other digital skills as demanded by the new world order.
