The Ogeloyinbo of Ayetoro in Ilaje Local Government Area of Ondo state, Oba Oluwambe Ojagbohunmi (JP), has raised serious concerns about the devastating impqact of coastal degradation on the Ayetoro community.
Speaking to our correspondent via a phone call after a meeting on Friday at the national conference organised by the Human Environmental and Development Agenda (HEDA) Resource Centre in Abuja, the monarch, through his Personal Assistant, Comrade Akingboye Thompson, highlighted the plight of his people.
Oba Ojagbohunmi described the dire situation in the community, revealing that over 5,000 residents have been displaced, critical infrastructure destroyed, and vast portions of land consumed by the encroaching sea.
“We are grappling with an ecological catastrophe of unprecedented proportions. It is imperative that the government takes immediate and decisive action to address this issue,” the monarch urged.
The Hope reports that the Ogeloyinbo’s urgent appeal aligns with ongoing protests by the Ayetoro community, which has consistently called for government intervention to reclaim lost land and provide relief for those affected.
As part of their advocacy efforts, the community has scheduled another protest against the relentless sea incursion for January 12, 2025.
