Ojuimole inferno: ODHA tasks Chevron to cleanup communities

The ad-hoc committee set up by the Ondo state House of Assembly to investigate the inferno at Ojuimole oil field has directed Chevron Nigeria Limited to ensure that the cleanup of affected communities is done in line with environmental safety regulations.

This was part of the resolutions reached at the end of the meeting with Chevron, the Owner of Ojuimole oil field which went up in flame three months ago.

The people of Ojuimole and neighbouring communities were affected by the pollution occasioned by the fire.

After several hours of deliberations at the meeting which was attended by the Speaker of the State Assembly, Mr Bamidele Oloyelogun, members of the ad hoc committee and Chevron officials, it was resolved that Chevron must ensure that all  the affected communities are reached.

The meeting also resolved that efforts should be geared up to put in place a permanent health facility in the affected communities

The committee also directed Chevron to create jobs for the youths in the oil producing communities.

The committee also said that the ad-hoc committee must be notified and properly informed all major activities carried out in this communities while Chevron Nigerian Limited should create an administrative office in Ilaje Local Government as soon as possible.

The resolution also mandated Chevron to liaise with the state Chairman Internal Revenue Service on the issue of arrears of taxes owed by the company and quickly report back to the committee in the next one month.

The committee urge the Chairman of the affected communities to relate with the lawmakers through the committee’s Secretary on the development on the issue.

The Ad-hoc Chairman of the Ojumole oil well incident, Prince Abayomi Akinruntan commended Chevron Nigeria Limited for their cooperation so far since the beginning  of the public hearing on the incident.
