Okada riders attack Akoko police station, beat officer

By: Adeboye Ado

Some motorcyclists popularly known as Okada Riders, numbering about 100 have reportedly attacked the Police Station in Oka-Akoko, Akoko South West Local Government Area of Ondo State.

The motorcyclists were said to have invaded the police station, assaulted a policeman as well snatched the phone of the Divisional Police Officer (DPO).

A police source who craved anonymity said the motorcyclists stormed the police station in search of a driver reportedly involved in an accident with a motorcyclist along Epinmi road.

“We were in the police station when we received a call that a fatal accident happened along Epinmi road, so we went there, took some to the hospital.

“Not quite long, we saw many people trooped to the station demanding that they want to see driver who hit the motorcyclist.

“We were trying to address the situation when they used stick to beat one of our officers and snatched the phone of our DPO.

“We tried to prevent them from causing mayhem but they were about 100 who trooped to the station,” the Source said.

In a related development, another Police source disclosed that two of the motorcyclists who attacked the station have been apprehended.

“We have arrested two among the motorcyclists who assaulted the officers and they will be charged to court,” the Source anonymously said.

Efforts to reach the Divisional Police Officer for comment proved abortive.

In his reaction, the Olubaka of Oka, Oba. Yusuf Adebori Adeleye, confirmed the incident while he condemned the attack on the police Station.

“The police were on a rescue mission and the motorcyclists misconstrue the move of the police. People should desist from taking laws into their hands,” the Oba. Adebori said.
