Olofun stool: Irele youths call for installation of new monarch
By Victor Akinkuolie, Ode-Irele
Youths in Ode-Irele, headquarters of Irele Local Government area of Ondo State, have appealed to the Ondo State Government to expedite action on the installation of a new Olofun of Ode-Irele, seven years after the stool became vacant.
The youths, under the aegis of the Coalition of Irele Progressive Youth Movement (CIPYM), made the appeal in a statement signed by the Coordinator, Comrade Akinboyo Michael; Assistant Coordinator, Comrade Falona Rotimi; and the Spokesperson, Comrade Akinseloyin Ọlálékan.
They personally urged Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa to facilitate the installation of a new king for the town, stating that such a move would bring peace, unity, and progress to the community.
In the release dated 31st May 2025, the group also called on the ruling houses in the town to hasten the selection process and reach a united resolution to present a qualified prince for the stool.
Expressing serious concern over the prolonged delay, they noted that the stool has remained vacant for nearly seven years—an issue they said has caused significant setbacks, disunity, and disharmony in the community’s development efforts.
“We believe this step is essential for the progress and unity of our community. If this demand is not met within the specified timeframe of one month, we plan to engage the concerned ruling houses to mediate and reach an amicable resolution on the matter.
“We value your leadership, Mr Governor, and appreciate your commitment to peace and unity in various communities across Ondo State.
“However, we seek your intervention in ensuring a peaceful resolution to this issue. While we understand that there are pending court cases, we are also taking steps from our end to resolve the matter amicably,” the release added.
The youths further announced that a town hall meeting has been scheduled to hold at a later date, following a series of engagements already held with the ruling houses and other relevant stakeholders in the town. The aim, they said, is to find a lasting and peaceful solution to any conflict surrounding the Obaship issue.
They also commended the Ondo State Governor for his ongoing efforts to promote peace and development across towns and villages, and urged him to apply his leadership experience in resolving the long-standing vacancy on the Olofun stool.
