Olowo advocates true federalism

From Jimoh Ahmed, Owo

The Olowo of Owo,  Oba Ajibade Ogunoye, has again stressed the need for Nigeria to embrace true federalism as a way out of the sociopolitical quagmire the country is currently experiencing.

Oba Ogunoye stated this while  speaking at the recently concluded ‘Yoruba Security Summit’ held at Ile-Ife.

The Olowo also enjoined Nigerians, irrespective of religions, ethnic differences, political divide, rank and position, individual interests  to join the call for a true federalism to be practiced in the country.

According to the monarch, federalism as currently being practiced in Nigeria is different from how it is being practiced in other climes.

While giving the example of Canada, USA and Germany as countries practising true federalism,  Oba Ogunoye said it remains the only way out of our present socioeconomic and political problems in the country.

Speaking on the gains of true federalism, the Olowo said if it is practised as laid down in the Independence Constitution of the country, all states will have their own police as well as the federal government.

Equally, he disclosed that with the system, the states will have the big share in the revenue allocation as the states will only contribute to the purse of the federal government thereby allowing the states to develop at their own pace.

In the meantime, Oba Ogunoye  charged traditional rulers not to abandon the traditional means of securing and fortifying their domains as practised before now.

He equally advised all monarchs in the South/west to go back to the basics and ensure the security of their people are taken with more vigour.
