Olowo celebrates Igogo

The ancient town of Owo was yesterday thrown into a cultural carnival as Olowo of Owo, Oba Ajibade Gbadegesin Ogunoye III, celebrated the annual Igogo festival
The Olowo decked in coral beads and surrounded by prominent chiefs danced round the palace amidst encomoium from the indigenes of the town who joined the Oba in the celebration
The world acclaimed festival is an annual event in Owo celebrated in honour of the one of the wives of the Olowo called Oronshen.
The festival otherwise known as the festival of the maiden or love is held in high esteem by the Olowo and his subjects.
The 2020 edition is the second of the Olowo since he ascended the throne.
A sharp departure from last year’s edition, the Olowo did not dance round the town with his retinue of chiefs and the residents but limited himself to the palace ground and the Ulede Market Square popularly called Oja Oba where he prayed for the peace, progress and development of the town.
Oba Gbadegesin Ogunoye III also appeal to the people to celebrate the festival with peace.
The Olowo use the occasion to call on well to do indigenes of the town at home and in diaspora to join hands with him to take the ancient kingdom to greater heights.
The 17 days festival started on August 29, 2020 with the first Upeli procession by the Iloro chiefs and ends on September 22, 2020 with the Ugbeyaloke.
Although, not with its usual pomp, this year Igogo drawn tourists from within and outside the country as tourists from around the world were around to enjoy themselves.
