Ondo Assembly urged to reduce Regents’ tenure

As delays in selecting traditional rulers continue in communities in Ondo State, stakeholders have called on the State House of Assembly to urgently pass a bill that will reduce the tenure of regents after traditional rulers join their ancestors.

Checks by The Hope revealed that there are number of vacant royal stools in the state, which some are either delayed due to litigation or snail pace of selection process.

Speaking on the issue, a prominent son of Ikakumo, Mr. Sunday Omogboye, urged the government to take swift action by limiting the recognition of regents to a maximum of six months.

“It is becoming worrisome that many royal stools remain vacant for years due to prolonged regency. This affects leadership, development, and cultural continuity in our communities,” Omogboye stated.

He further appealed to lawmakers to ensure that once the six-month period elapses, steps should be taken to install a substantive Oba to prevent unnecessary delays in traditional leadership.

Also speaking, a community stakeholder, Mr. Julius Ikumapayi urged the State Government to look into the elongation, stating that there should be a fixed tenure.

“There should be a fixed tenure instead of the unnecessary interregnum in our towns in Ondo State. Our government should look into this,” Ikumapayi said.
