Ondo begins digital ID for pensioners Monday

The Ondo State Local Government Pension Transitional Department (LGPTD) will commence the verification and production of digital identification cards for all Local Government and Primary School pensioners across the state on Monday, May 12, 2025.

This was contained in a circular signed by the Permanent Secretary, Local Government Service Commission, Dr (Mrs) Mercy Olayinka Femi-Idris, and made available to journalists in Akure.

According to the circular, the initiative is aimed at easing identification challenges confronting pensioners and preventing harassment from taxing and rating officers.

It stated, “This is to announce to the general public, especially pensioners on the payment platform of the Local Government Pension Transitional Department in Ondo State, the commencement of production of identification cards for pensioners in the Local Government.”

“The production of digital identification cards for all pensioners in the Local Government, which has been in high demand, would help eliminate the undue harassment of our senior citizens by tax officers, enhance the process of pensioner identification and prevent identity theft and fraud,” it added.

The statement revealed that the cards would feature special security elements and would contain vital information such as the pensioner’s name, pensioner number, date of birth, fingerprint impression, and photograph. The card, it added, would be printed on durable plastic bearing the Ondo State insignia.

Pensioners are expected to present themselves for biometric capture—photo and fingerprint—as well as verification of their personal details already captured on the payment platform.

They are required to present the following documents at designated collation centres within their Local Government pay points:

  1. Approval letter issued by the Local Government Pension Transitional Department
  2. National Identification Card issued by the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC)
  3. A copy of Bank Verification Number (BVN) printout containing personal information from the pensioner’s bank

For pensioners residing abroad, the circular explained that a public portal would be launched to enable seamless participation. The portal will allow data entry, uploading of relevant documents, and a five-second live video recording to serve as proof of life.
