Ondo bye-election: Parties boast of victory

The opposition political parties in Ondo State have expressed their readiness for the Saturday bye-election for Akoko Northeast/Akoko Northwest federal constituency, boasting respectively that they were confident of victory in the election.

    The African Democratic Congress (ADC), the All Progressives Congress (APC), All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Action People’s Party (APP), Labour Party (LP), New Nigerian Peoples Party (NNPP) , Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Social Democratic Party (SDP) are participating in the election scheduled for February 3.

In separate interviews with The Hope, the State  Publicity Secretary of the PDP and the Chairman of the NNPP in the state, Mr. Kennedy Peretei and Mr. Peter Olagookun respectively said their parties will win the election.

Peretei said that in terms of preparations, the PDP has prepared as it has been on the field since January 18 as approved by INEC, stressing that” we have been overwhelmed by the rousing welcome we receive in all the communities we have visited. So, we are very prepared for the D-Day.

According to him ” INEC being an institution funded with tax payers’ money has a responsibility to live above board.

“However, in previous elections, there have been cases where INEC staff have been found wanting in the discharge of their duties.

 I want to believe that because all eyes will be on INEC they will not compromise the elections as that is the only way to deepen our democracy”

To further make the election credible, Peretei said  INEC should transmit the results to its Result Viewing Portal  so as to assure everybody that the Commission has nothing to hide.

He charged security agencies to concern themselves with only maintaining peace and not to descend to the arena by taking sides.

“Considering the pedigree of our candidate Lekan Bada and the work our party has done, we are sure of victory at the polls” he said.

On his part, the State Chairman of NNPP, Mr. Peter Olagookun, assured of the victory of the party in the election following its house- to-house, ward- to- ward campaign, achievements and manifestos of the party’s candidate.

Olagookun, who expressed confidence in the electoral umpire on the election charged the Commission to conduct the election in free and fair manner.

While calling on the security agencies to be neutral in the discharge of their duties, the chairman urged them not to allow themselves to be used by unscrupulous politicians or person during the election.

When contacted to speak on behalf of the APC, the State Publicity Secretary of the party, Mr.Alex Kalejaye declined to respond, saying until certain condition are met.
