The Commissioner of Police, Ondo State Police Command, CP Wilfred Afolabi has addressed the controversy surrounding a viral video alleging police misconduct, clarifying the circumstances that led to the deployment of officers to Idogun community in Ose Local Government area.
Speaking at a press briefing, the commissioner stated that the incident stemmed from the activities of one Mr.Jide Falade, who had been found criminally liable and had 10 count charges against him.
“There were 10 charges against him, and he was prosecuted accordingly. When the case went to court, he was remanded at the Ondo Correctional Center. The moment the people in the community heard about it, they rioted, made bonfires, and cut down a very big tree across the road. As a result, we had to deploy more of our men to the area to calm the situation,” the CP explained.
Addressing allegations in the viral video that police officers stole mobile phones, the commissioner dismissed the claims, stating that the officers involved explained they had only gone to a known location where they regularly charged their phones.
He noted that no formal complaint of theft had been lodged with the police and suggested that the video may have been part of a deliberate attempt by sympathizers of Falade.
to discredit the police
“The Nigeria Police is a disciplined organisation, and I cannot imagine an inspector condescending so low to go and steal cheap phones for whatever reason”, the Commissioner asserted.
He further distanced the police from any involvement in the chieftaincy dispute within the community, advising residents to follow legal channels for resolving their grievances rather than resorting to violence.
The commissioner urged the public to disregard the allegations in the viral video, reaffirming the police’s commitment to upholding peace and justice in the state.
