Ondo CP redeploys Igbara-Oke DPO over alleged extortion

Ondo State Commissioner of Police, Wilfred Afolabi, has ordered the immediate redeployment of the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in charge of Igbara-Oke Division, Ganiyu Dauda, following allegations of extortion.

In a statement signed by the command’s spokesperson DSP Olushola Ayanlade,on Sunday in Akure, said the decision was made in response to accusations levelled against the officer by members of the local community.

It will be recalled that residents of Igbara-Oke, located in Ifedore Local Government area, staged a protest on Friday, accusing the DPO of extortion.

The demonstrators, who carried leaves as a symbol of peace, blocked the main road into the town to voice their displeasure.

According to spokesperson , the redeployment followed the circulation of a viral video on social media showing the DPO being openly accused of extortion by aggrieved residents during a heated exchange.

“In response to the video and the serious nature of the allegations, the Commissioner of Police, Wilfred Afolabi, has ordered an immediate and thorough investigation into the incident,” the statement read.

“The investigation aims to uncover the circumstances surrounding the confrontation and to uphold the integrity of the Nigeria Police Force.

“Preliminary findings suggest that the incident arose from a dispute between the DPO and certain community members. The matter has since been amicably resolved, following the timely intervention of the Ifedore Local Government Chairman, who facilitated dialogue between the parties involved.”

In keeping with internal procedure and to ensure fairness during the inquiry, the police command confirmed that the DPO has been redeployed from the Igbara-Oke Division pending the outcome of the investigation.

Reiterating the command’s commitment to transparency, accountability and public trust, Ayanlade  therefore urged members of the public to remain calm and allow due process to take its course.
