safety inspection, sanctions begin soon

The Ondo State Government has stepped up efforts to tackle safety risks posed by mini gas plants operating across the state, particularly those running without proper licences or meeting basic safety standards.
Prince Adebawo Wellington, Special Adviser to Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa on Emergency Response, told Weekend Hope in Akure on Thursday that many of the facilities currently operating are illegal and pose serious dangers to lives and property.
“Safety is the most important thing we need to prioritise. Protecting lives and property is the top priority of the present government,” he said, stressing that operators who fail to adhere to safety protocols will face sanctions.
Under the new regulations, all gas plants must be equipped with essential fire safety equipment, including fire extinguishers and other protective devices. Wellington warned, “Without these precautions in place, they cannot be allowed to operate.”
To ensure compliance, the state will carry out a comprehensive survey to determine the total number of gas plant operators in each local government area.
“Currently, we lack complete data on the number of gas stations operating across the state. This exercise will allow us to understand the scope and guarantee that safety rules are followed,” he explained.
Wellington also highlighted growing public concern over the hazards posed by mini gas plants, noting that residents living near these facilities have repeatedly expressed fear for their safety.
“The safety of people living around these stations is our priority. We urge all operators to comply with the rules and put all required safety measures in place,” he said.
Inspections will begin in the coming weeks, with enforcement teams ready to ensure full compliance across the state. Residents are encouraged to dial 112 in case of emergencies, with the government promising swift intervention.
