Ondo, Ekiti Courts remand 4 over murder, cultism

An Akure Magistrate’s Court has remanded a 25-year-old suspected cultist, Femi Abejoye over the alleged murder of one Saheed Oyeyemi.

The defendant, whose address was not known, was brought to court by the   Department of State Services (DSS), Ondo State Command on a two-count charge of murder and cultism.

According to the state prosecutor, A. O Akinwalere, the defendant and others at large, committed the offences on December 6, 2022, at about 8:30p.m at Igbokoda, Ilaje Local Government area of Ondo State.

Akinwalere informed the court that the defendant and his accomplices, being members of a secret society called “Aiye Confraternity” conspired to kill one Sahim Oyeyemi popularly known as Jaske.

He said they killed him by violently launching an attack with a battle axe that led to the death of the victim.

Akinwalere went on to say that the defendant, between 2020 and March 2022, was involved in cultism and hidden cult activities and was found with some items which includes a battle axe.

The offences according to the charge contravene Sections 316 and 320(1)(2) of the Criminal Code, Cap. 37 Vol. 1, Laws of Ondo State, 2006, as well as Section 1(1) Vol. 2 of the Secret Cult and Similar Activities Prohibition Laws of Ondo State, 2006

The prosecutor, through an application, asked the court to remand the defendant to the correctional center pending the issuance of advice from the Director of Public Prosecution, DPP.

The defendant pleaded not guilty to all the charges leveled against him.

In his ruling, Magistrate O.L Abu ordered that the defendant should be remanded at the Olokuta Correctional Centre pending advice from the DPP.

He adjourned the case till April 24, 2023, for mention.

In a similar case, an Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistrate’s Court, on Thursday ordered the remand of Sunday Obasuyi, 42; Akinniyi Ojo, 51, and Bobade Sunday, 51, in the correctional centre  over alleged kidnapping and murder of an 82-year-old man.

The defendants,  who are residents of Agbado-Ekiti, Gbonyin local government area of Ekiti,are facing a three-count charge of conspiracy, kidnapping and murder.

The police prosecutor, Akinwale Oriyomi, told the court that the defendants committed the offence on February 1 at about 11:00 a.m in Agbado-Ekiti.

Oriyomi alleged that the defendants conspired and kidnapped one 82-year-old, Michael Obasuyi.

He alleged that the defendants murdered the deceased and dug the ground to  bury him, adding that after some weeks,  the police combed the bush and saw the deceased body.

He said the first defendant was the deceased’s son, who conspired with other defendants and sold the deceased for N1.8 million to the third defendant, who was an herbalist.

According to him, the offences contravene Sections 280, 279 and 234 of the Criminal Laws of Ekiti State, 2021.

The prosecutor urged the court to remand the defendants in a correctional centre, pending advice from the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

Chief Magistrate Bankole Oluwasanmi ordered the remand of the defendants in the Ado Ekiti Correctional Centre, pending issuance of advice.

He adjourned the case till April 24 for mention.
