Farmers in Ondo State have officially commenced the planting of agricultural produce for the 2025 farming season.
The President of the Ondo State Farmers’ Congress, Farmer Abayomi Monilari, disclosed this during an interview with The Hope yesterday in Akure.
He mentioned that farmers had been advised to wait till April 15th, mid-month, to ensure sufficient rainfall to sustain the crops once the rains stabilise.
“We are moving faster now because there is enough water for the crops, so farmers can cultivate land that will be suitable for planting,” he said.
Describing Governor Aiyedatiwa as a farmer-friendly leader, Monilari expressed confidence that government support for the planting season is on its way. However, he emphasized that the government must recognize that agriculture is seasonal, and planning and implementation should be done promptly.
He urged the government to address insecurity issues that are driving farmers away from their farms and posing a risk of famine.
Monilari also reminded the government of its promise regarding tractorisation, stating, “The government should ensure that these resources are available, because it is not something farmers can manage on their own.”
Additionally, he appealed to the government to provide subsidized agrochemicals to farmers
