Ondo state farmers have began massive irrigation system to tackle food shortage and make the state self-sustaining and independent in food production.
The President of Farmers Congress and Chairman of All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN) Mr. Abayomi Monilari disclosed this in an interview with The Hope yesterday in Akure, the state capital.
Monilari said the farmers were supported by the irrigation equipment given by the Federal Government at a subsidized rate to ensure round the year farming.
He said the farmers Congress empowered farmers with varieties of seeds’ seedlings as majority of farmers are presently nursing millions of seedlings to meet this year’s farming season.
” I have personally produced 40,000 tomato seedlings, 20,000 Green pepper, 20,000 Cabbage and 10,000 cucumber seedlings for replantation.
“We have a lot of farmers like that too, to make sure that there is no food shortage and that we are secured with food”
“We do not have to panic with the threat of the northerners not bringing food, in fact, they should stop bringing them because we will soon bridge the gap and will have excess to send to the neighbouring states around us.”
” Our eyes have now been opened on the importance of irrigation because farmers make more money during the dry season,” he observed.
According to him, the money used in buying the foods imported from the northerners will be domiciled within the state to be used to develop the state rather than taking it to the northern states.
He noted that the state is at the advantage of irrigation system, saying that God has blessed the state with rivers, streams, running water, swampy areas which could be utilized for irrigation system of farming.
