Ondo govt cautions taxi operators over misuse of bus shelters

By Kemi Olatunde

The Ondo State Government has raised concerns over the indiscriminate use of bus shelters by taxi operators, warning that such actions obstruct public transport services and contribute to traffic congestion.

The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Transport, Segun Odusanya, made this known during a familiarisation visit by the leadership of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) to his office in Akure.

Odusanya, who acknowledged the crucial role of transportation in the socio-economic growth of the state, commended the union for the visit.

However, he frowned upon the non-uniformity of taxi colours, insisting that commercial vehicles in the state must be painted yellow and blue.

“Taxi operators are required to paint their vehicles in these colours, and failure to comply will result in consequences.
Additionally, taxi operators plying certain routes must register with NURTW, use red plate numbers, and obtain emblems for identification,” he stated.

He condemned the practice of taxis parking at bus shelters during operational hours between 6:00 am and 8:30 am, as well as 2:00 pm and 4:00 pm, stressing that it impedes the smooth movement of school shuttle buses and worsens traffic congestion.

Odusanya urged the operators to desist from the act and adhere to designated loading points outside approved parks.

He also emphasised the importance of parking responsibly to ensure free traffic flow and prevent accidents, adding that taxi operators must maintain orderliness in their dealings with the union.

In his remarks, the State Chairman of NURTW, Comrade Odudu Ademola, appreciated Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa’s administration for its continued support and pledged the union’s cooperation with the Ministry to enhance the state’s transportation system.
