Ondo govt reads riot act to illegal loggers, forest looters

The Ondo State Government has issued a stern warning against the unauthorised transportation of logs and flitches from forest reserves across the state.
This decisive move, according to the government, forms part of ongoing efforts to entrench sustainable forestry practices and boost the state’s economy through value-added wood products.
The warning was handed down by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry (Forestry/Produce sub-sector), Chief Olusegun Odusanya, during a meeting with foresters and uniformed personnel held at the Ministry’s headquarters in Alagbaka, Akure.
Odusanya, while emphasising strict adherence to forestry regulations, informed the officers that illegal logging remains completely outlawed.
He charged the officers to seal revenue-draining loopholes, underscoring the importance of collective responsibility in strengthening the state’s revenue base.
The Permanent Secretary further reiterated the government’s unwavering commitment to protecting forest resources while promoting the production of value-added wood in line with sustainable forest management.
He charged the officers to render quality service, shun unethical practices, and uphold professionalism in the discharge of their duties.
Odusanya also appealed for the cooperation of all forest stakeholders in achieving the Ministry’s objectives, pledging to address the concerns raised during the meeting.
Earlier, the Director of Forest Management, Dr Joseph Adeyekun, lauded the Permanent Secretary for initiating the engagement, describing it as a vital platform for open dialogue geared towards addressing challenges and enhancing operational efficiency.
In the same vein, the Assistant Director, Mrs Oluwayemi Johnson, called on forest operators to comply strictly with forestry laws to ensure effective protection of forest resources and improved revenue generation.
She highlighted the Ministry’s dual mandate of safeguarding forest assets while serving as a revenue earner for the state.
