Following recent incidents involving kidnapping, robbery, and cult-related attacks in Ore, Odigbo Local Government area of Ondo State, the state Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Dr. Olukayode Ajulo, has reiterated Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa’s steadfast dedication to the safety and well-being of residents across the state.
Speaking in a statement, Ajulo underscored the government’s unwavering focus on enhancing the security of lives and property while addressing emerging security challenges.
“Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa has taken a pragmatic approach to address issues of public safety,” Ajulo stated. “A directive was recently issued to amend state laws to reflect current realities, especially concerning security, public safety, and peace. Existing laws, including those against cultism, are undergoing a comprehensive review to address gaps and incorporate stricter penalties.”
Ajulo highlighted the inadequacies in the existing laws, noting that while earlier provisions recognized only about 200 cult groups, many more have since emerged.
He emphasized the need to update legal frameworks to tackle contemporary challenges effectively.
“For instance, some laws previously prescribed a six-year prison term for certain offenses, which is no longer sufficient to deter violators. Governor Aiyedatiwa has mandated harsher penalties, including a 21-year prison term for severe offenses and the death penalty for crimes such as murder.
This revision aims to restore deterrence and strengthen the justice system,” he explained.
The Attorney General further disclosed that the Governor has approved ongoing training programs for investigators and prosecutors to bolster their capacity in handling criminal cases.
Additionally, the government is fostering stronger collaboration between security agencies to ensure a more coordinated approach to tackling insecurity.
A new task force, the Governor’s Task Force Against Cultism, has been established to combat cult-related activities effectively.
Ajulo assured residents that the Governor, as the Chief Security Officer of the State, is consistently reviewing and improving Ondo State’s security architecture.
“The safety of lives and protection of businesses and investments remain top priorities for Governor Aiyedatiwa. His administration is working tirelessly to ensure a secure and prosperous state for all residents,” he affirmed.
Ajulo reassured the public that perpetrators of criminal acts would be brought to justice without delay.
“This government is committed to fairness, justice, and the welfare of the people. No effort will be spared to achieve these goals,” he concluded.
The Ondo State Government urges all residents to remain vigilant and support ongoing efforts to create a safer, more peaceful environment for everyone.
