Ondo govt unveils modern master plan for Akure, other major cities

By Josephine Oguntoyinbo

In a move to revolutionise the physical landscape of Ondo State, Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa is set to approve a modern master plan for Akure, the state capital, and other key cities within the state.

This is in line with his administration’s commitment to advancing its urban renewal agenda.

This was revealed by the Permanent Secretary of the State Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development, Chief Bunmi Alade, during a stakeholders’ meeting with the Deji of Akure and his Council of Chiefs at the royal palace.

Alade emphasised that the administration is resolutely focused on enhancing the quality of life for the people, particularly in Akure, by promoting sustainable and well-ordered growth.

The meeting, he explained, was essential to seek the cooperation of the Deji and the people of Akure in driving the development of the metropolis into a well-structured state capital.

Accompanied by the Director of the Master Plan Department, Mr. Abimbola Tofowomo, and other senior Ministry officials, Alade urged the monarch to continue sensitising his people about the dangers of erecting illegal structures in the town.

He warned that the Ministry would soon begin demolitions of such buildings, without notice or compensation.

The Permanent Secretary also called on prospective builders and contractors to approach the Ministry to obtain the necessary approvals before embarking on any construction.

He reiterated that all buildings must comply with the state’s building codes and regulations.

Alade further explained that a comprehensive layout for each community is essential, with designated spaces for vital public amenities, such as schools, health centres, and markets.

In response, the Deji of Akure, Oba Ogunlade Aladetoyinbo, voiced his concerns over the growing number of illegal constructions in government setbacks and unauthorised areas.

He urged the Ministry to ramp up monitoring efforts to curb such activities, which could jeopardise the government’s development goals.

The Deji also commended Governor Aiyedatiwa’s visionary urban renewal policies and the Ministry’s efforts to mitigate the negative impacts of unchecked development in Akure and the state at large.

He assured full support from his people in ensuring the success of the government’s plans.
