Not less than 2,000 delegates are expected to participate in the Ondo state gubernatorial primary election of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, scheduled to hold at the Dome in Akure today, to choose its flagbearer for the October 20 poll.
An indirect mode of primary will be used to pick the party’s flag bearer among the eight aspirants jostling for the plum position.
The aspirants are; former governorship candidate of the PDP, Eyitayo Jegede, SAN, the Ondo State Deputy Governor, Mr Agboola Ajayi who defected to the party recently and a former federal lawmaker, Dr Bode Ayorinde.
Others are; former publicity secretary of the party, Banji Okunomo; former commissioner under late Olusegun Agagu, Dr Eddy Olafeso and Businessman, Godday Erewa.
Also in the race are former commissioner under Olusegun Mimiko, Olusola Ebiseni and former Senator, Boluwaji Kunlere.
Agboola Ajayi’s service to the people began with his appointment as a supervisor for Ese-Odo Local Government between 1999 and 2003, then another appointment as the caretaker Chairman of Ese-Odo Local Government between 2003 and 2004. He is the present deputy governor of the state.
Banji Okunomo, is a one-time chairman of Ilaje Local Government Area and a foundation member of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) since 1998. He became a member of the PDP leaders’ Caucus Ilaje Local Government Chapter in 2001and in 2003 aspired for the House of Assembly Seat of Ilaje constituency 2 under the platform of the PDP and was appointed the Chairman of Ilaje Local Government from 2011 to 2013.
Bode Ayorinde, is the Proprietor of Achievers University and was a former governorship aspirant of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in the 2016 election.
Boluwaji Kunlere became the secretary of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Ondo state. He ran for election to the Senate for Ondo South in April 2007 on the Labour Party platform, but was defeated by Hosea Ehinlanwo. In March 2009 he was appointed Special Adviser to Governor Olusegun Mimiko on Political Affairs and Legal Matters.
Olusola Ebiseni is a three-time Commissioner in Ondo State. He is member of the National Caucus of the Afenifere.
Eddy Olafeso served in Ondo State Executive Council as a Commissioner for Information and Mobilization from 2007 to 2009. He held various positions in PDP in Ondo State including Secretary PDP, Ondo State 2007 and Chairman, PDP State Contact Committee.
It was also learnt that at a meeting presided over by the National Chairman of PDP, Prince Uche Secondus, none of the party’s governorship aspirants agreed to step down for a consensus candidate.
It was gathered that since the meeting did not achieve its objective of getting a consensus candidate, the PDP NWC pledged to conduct a free, fair and transparent election.
All the governorship aspirants also signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to support any candidate that emerges at the election.
The Chairman of the party in the state, Mr Clement Faboyede said regulations have been put in place for the smooth conduct of the primary election.
