The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) in Ondo State has called for continued peace in the build up to the November 16 governorship election.
In a communique issued by State Secretary, Olaoluwa Meshack after its monthly congress, the NUJ emphasized the need for all political parties, candidates, and supporters to uphold peaceful conduct throughout the electoral process.
The NUJ also urged candidates to focus on issue-based campaigns, enabling voters to make well-informed choices, and cautioned the electorate against selling their votes, which could jeopardize the future of both the state and the next generation.
The union expressed satisfaction with the level of preparation by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security agencies, calling on them and other stakeholders to maintain a level playing field for a credible election.
Furthermore, the NUJ advised INEC to cooperate with the union in accrediting journalists for the event, ensuring that only qualified professionals cover the election, thereby preventing any potential unrest from unverified reporting.
The NUJ congress encouraged its members to uphold journalistic ethics, particularly the importance of fact-checking, to support accurate and responsible journalism during the election period.
