Ondo guber: Chief of Defence Staff lauds troops’ readiness, calls for impartiality

By Tola Gbadamosi

Ahead of this Saturday’s gubernatorial election, the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Musa, visited the 32 Artillery Brigade, Owena Cantonment in Akure, to assess the readiness of troops supporting the Nigerian Police Force (NPF) in ensuring a secure electoral process.

In his address, General Musa commended the personnel for their efforts in maintaining peace and stability in Ondo State.

“Akure and Ondo State have remained very peaceful and calm.

“It shows that we have been working together as a team,” he noted, emphasising the importance of unity among security forces in upholding peace for the benefit of all Nigerians.

With the elections approaching, General Musa urged the troops to remain professional, impartial, and vigilant, underscoring the critical role security agencies play in enabling a free and fair election.

“We all know the importance and relevance of elections.

“I want to appeal to all of us to put in our very best,” he said, drawing attention to the recent success of security operations during the elections in Edo State as a model.

According to Nigeria’s constitutional framework for elections, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) will be the lead agency, while the Nigerian Police will act as the primary security force, supported by the military and other security agencies.

General Musa reiterated that collaboration with INEC and the police would be crucial in preventing any disruptions by criminal elements.

“Once we work together, criminals cannot penetrate. Everybody is important. This is our country, and we each have a role to play,” he stated.

Highlighting the necessity of close monitoring, General Musa stressed the importance of efficient communication and oversight, particularly concerning the troops on the ground.

“We must monitor what our men do. Most of the time, the challenge comes from the personnel on the ground.

“We must have a system-efficient monitoring team, and there should be communication whenever issues arise,” he explained.

General Musa also relayed compliments from President Bola Tinubu, who emphasised the need for a peaceful and well-coordinated election process.

“Mr. President wants me to come around and see how this one is going, how the synergy is progressing,” he said. “I’m very pleased to report that you are all working very well and very efficiently.”

The Defence Chief concluded with an appeal for professionalism, reminding the troops that maintaining peace throughout the election is essential to upholding their reputation and commitment.

He encouraged everyone to remain calm, fair, and focused, ensuring no missteps that could compromise the integrity of the electoral process.
