Ondo guber: Security agencies express readiness for upcoming election

To address significant gaps in coverage and reporting ahead of the forthcoming governorship election in Ondo State, security agencies have assured that they will provide protection for all stakeholders, including journalists, on election day.
They also sought the cooperation of these stakeholders to ensure a smooth process.
This assurance was given during a two-day seminar organised for journalists in Akure, Ondo State capital, by the International Press Centre (IPC) and the Centre for Media and Society (CEMESO).
The security agencies were represented by Ondo State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Funmilayo Odunlami-Omisanya, and her counterpart from the NSCDC, Daniel Aidamebor, who engaged in a robust dialogue with journalists and other stakeholders about election day procedures.
They further sought cooperation to achieve a smooth electoral process in the state.
The second day of the initiative, which included participants from the broadcast, print, and online media, was supported by funding from the European Union’s Support to Democratic Governance in Nigeria Project II.
IPC Executive Director, Mr. Lanre Arogundade, explained that the media dialogue served as a platform to address lingering doubts and ensure the dissemination of accurate information. This will empower citizens to know what actions to take, especially when faced with challenges.
He stressed the importance of knowing whom to contact and the appropriate steps to follow.
Arogundade described the interactive session as a means to ensure that the November 16 governorship election is credible and acceptable to the people.
He also highlighted the need for accountability in the electoral process.
“One of the focuses of this project is the need for journalists to ensure democratic accountability. Section 22 of the 1999 Constitution requires the media to monitor governance and hold the government accountable to the people.
“We intend to focus not just on the executive but also on key players in the process,” Arogundade added.
He advised stakeholders to urge the media to correct any incorrect information they encounter.
The representative of the National Orientation Agency (NOA) in Ondo State, Assistant Director Mr. Wale Obanigba, stated that the agency, as a major stakeholder in the election process, had already commenced the sensitisation of eligible voters on their responsibilities before, during, and after the election.
He noted that this exercise would continue across all eighteen local government areas of Ondo State until the week of the election.
Journalists have been charged with ensuring credible electoral reporting and processes.
