Ondo inferno: Father of two children killed, collapses, hospitalised

…as co-tenants blame wife for incident

Residents of Oluwatuyi area in Akure, Ondo State, were thrown into mourning on Wednesday as two children from the same family tragically lost their lives in a house fire.

An eyewitness told Weekend Hope that the father of the burnt children was reported to have collapsed immediately he got to the place and was rushed to the hospital.

“The father of the children collapsed upon seeing their charred remains and had to be rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment,” he said.

Meanwhile, co-tenants of the family have blamed the mother of the deceased for locking them inside, saying, “They were locked inside the apartment by their mother when the inferno occurred.”

The incident, which occurred at Church Street, Oluwatuyi quarters, Akure, the Ondo State capital, around 1:30 p.m., lasted for about two hours, completely razing the room where the children identified as Jenson, 3 and Jenlite, aged 5, were trapped.

The two siblings were burnt beyond recognition as neighbours, despite their efforts, were unable to gain access to the room to rescue them.

A neighbour said: “It was their mother’s habit of locking the children inside the house whenever she is going out. Witnesses said the fire began at about 3:30pm and consumed the innocent children.”

Other tenants in the building were said to have rushed to pack their belongings while frantic efforts were made to break into the raging fire to rescue the trapped children.

It was learnt that the fire had engulfed a large part of the apartment before help could reach the children.

Burnt remains of the toddlers were found at the entrance of the apartment after the fire was put out.

The tenant in the house who pleaded anonymity, said people mistook the children’s cries as normal routine beating from their mother.

Policemen from the B Division in Akure were seen evacuating the corpses, while the cause of the fire was yet to be known as of      the time of filing this report.

Their corpses have since been deposited at the University of Medical Sciences Teaching Hospital (UNIMED) morgue in Akure.
