The Ondo State Government has launched the maiden edition of the O’datiwa Women Fitness and Health Awareness Outreach in Akure, an initiative jointly organised by the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development and the Ministry of Youth and Sports Development.
Declaring the event open, the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Dr. Seun Osamaye, said the initiative is designed to empower women with vital knowledge on good nutrition and healthy living.
She commended the large turnout of participants, describing their enthusiasm as a reflection of women’s commitment to self-care and wellness.
Dr. Osamaye announced that the O’datiwa Fitness and Health Awareness Outreach will now hold every last Friday of the month to promote regular exercise and strengthen women’s physical and mental well-being.
She lauded Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa for his administration’s strong support for women’s growth and development, noting that he has continued to create an enabling environment for women to thrive in all sectors.
Also speaking, a nurse and member of the Hospital Management Board, Mrs. Arinola Adamolekun, urged women to prioritise their health by maintaining a balanced diet and engaging in regular physical activity. She emphasised the consumption of organic fruits, vegetables and natural meals for optimal wellness.
Mrs. Adamolekun also advised women to manage stress effectively, get adequate sleep, stay hydrated and avoid processed foods and excessive sugar intake. She encouraged them to form community support groups to help sustain healthy lifestyles beyond the monthly exercise sessions.
The event featured a lively aerobics session led by Coach Abimbola Oladimeji, Coach Ejibunnu Temitope and Coach O.Okedola, all certified fitness instructors. Participants engaged in stretching, cardio routines and strength-building exercises tailored for women of different ages.
During the dancing session, Dr. Osamaye reiterated that the outreach aligns with the state government’s broader agenda to reduce premature deaths among women, who often prioritise family needs above their personal health.
“This is not just an exercise programme; it is a movement to reclaim women’s vitality and promote healthy living,” she said.
Participants expressed appreciation to Governor Aiyedatiwa for his commitment to women’s welfare.
Mrs. Funmilayo Ojo, a trader and mother of three, said: “For the first time, the government is bringing health to our doorstep. We are felt, seen and valued.”
Other dignitaries present included Wives of Commissioners,Mrs Jumoke Aborode, Alhaja Rafat Omikunle (FOMWAN President), Alhaja Momoh, Mr. Mefun Tophas (Director, Child), and Mr. Olatunji Felix (Director, Accounts), among other women leaders and stakeholders.
The session ended with group photographs and shared refreshments, as participants left energised and motivated, pledging to return next month and invite others.
Stakeholders affirmed that the O’datiwa Women Fitness and Health Outreach has set a promising tone for a healthier and more empowered female population in Ondo State.
