The member representing Ilaje Constituency II and chairman of the House Committee on Women Affairs and Social Development in the Ondo State House of Assembly, Princess Olawumi Fayemi-Obayelu, has called on ward leaders and local government party chieftains to support women in the upcoming local government elections.
Speaking to the press at the State House of Assembly Complex, Igbatoro Road, Akure, she urged greater inclusion of women in councilorship and local government chairmanship elections.
She highlighted the critical role of women in political offices and their contributions to social development.
“Women have a clear vision when it comes to social issues and development in local communities. They understand the importance of governmental actions that directly impact families at the grassroots level,” she said.
“It is also important to note the declining representation of women in politics, both at the local government, state, and national levels. At this time, we are advocating for more women to enter politics. Therefore, our leaders need to support and encourage women by campaigning for them and ensuring they emerge victorious in the forthcoming local government elections.”
She commended the Governor of Ondo State, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, describing him as a “gender equaliser” and a strong advocate for women’s inclusion in the political process.
“He strongly believes that advancing women in politics is an opportunity for the development, growth, and progress of the state,” she added.
Princess Fayemi-Obayelu also underscored the importance of allowing women to hold sensitive positions, regardless of their complexity, citing the achievements of women currently serving in state and local government roles.
She emphasised that these women have demonstrated their capabilities and effectively represented their constituents, making a strong case for increasing women’s participation in governance.
As the Ondo State local government elections draw closer, the lawmaker reminded political stakeholders of the vital role women play in governance and decision-making processes.
