Ondo state is taking the lead among states producing tomatoes, cucumbers and other vegetables.

This was disclosed by the State Secretary of National Tomato Growers, Processors and Marketers’ Association, Mr Akin Ogunniyi in an interview with The Hope, shortly after a training for tomato farmers held in Akure.

His words :”We all know most of these vegetables were once brought from the north, and for some time now, we are becoming champions in the state in tomato, cucumber production and so many other vegetables.

“This training would add more to the knowledge and efficiency of the farmers.”

He said tomatoes and vegetable farmers across the state have been trained on  cultivation, disease management and product marketing to boost vegetable production.

This, he affirmed, would serve as a complementary effort to the state’s initiatives to ensure sufficient food supply.

In his remarks, Secretary of the Sunshine Vegetable Growers and Marketers Association, Mr Oluleye Kolade, praised the farmers, saying training has opened farmers’ eyes to new varieties and profitable opportunities.

The PRO of the National Tomato Growers, Processors and Marketers Association, Babatunde Durotimi, highlighted the training’s impact on farmers’ yields, appealing to government for support.

Durotimi emphasized the need for loans and agricultural inputs to further enhance production to benefit both the state and the nation.

The resource person, Mr Olawale Ojo, urged the farmers to build their association.

Olawale emphasized the importance of unity among farmers, urging them to form strong associations for mutual benefit and transparency.
