The Nigeria Institute of Building (NIOB) yesterday conferred an honorary Fellowship Award on the Ondo State Governor, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, for his valuable contribution to nation building and leadership excellence in the state.

The  award was conferred on the Governor at the 52nd Annual Builders’ Conference/ Annual General Meeting 2022, held at the International Culture and Events Centre, The Dome, Akure. The theme of the conference is, “The Role of the Building Profession in the Maintenance of National Assets”.

At the well attended event, Akeredolu who emphasised that the building and construction sector is very crucial to any economic development, appreciated the Institute for the honour done him with a promise not to take it for granted.

While declaring the conference open, Akeredolu charged the professionals in building industry to adopt the best modern practices in the design, construction and management of buildings in Nigeria, adding that necessary attention must be given to the facelift of public built- environment.

“You will vividly recall that President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR on Wednesday, 6th April, 2022 signed into effect Executive Order 11 on the Maintenance of National Public Buildings.

“The President speaking shortly before signing, directed all Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) of government to set up Maintenance Departments in line with the provisions of the new Executive Order.  The order now gives legal backing to the country’s National Maintenance Policy and it is our expectation that government at all levels would begin the implementation of the policy to give facelift to our public buildings.

“Ondo State had, prior to the signing of this Executive Order by Mr. President, operated a functional maintenance policy in its handling of public building assets.  At the inception of this administration, we made it absolutely clear that we wanted the best in terms of public infrastructure for our dear State.  We have, therefore, since taking the baton, ensured that all requisite professionals necessary to achieve this have been brought into the mix.

“Some of these projects are the ODIRS Headquarters Complex situated majestically opposite the venue of this conference, Home Owners Charter Building within the Ministry of Works compound, New Guest Chalets at Presidential Lodge on Government House Grounds and the ongoing ODBPP Office Building beside the Governor’s Office. Our officers have also performed exceptionally in the renovation, restructuring and maintenance of public buildings within the State.  The renovation and restructuring of the State Secretariat Office Complex and the TESCOM Building both situated within Alagbaka, Akure, are good examples”, the Governor said.

Earlier, the national officers of the Institute led by its President, Prof. Yohana Izam, had paid a courtesy visit to the Governor in his office where the Governor promised to domesticate National Building Code in the state.

The Governor also disclosed that his administration has recruited Professional builders into the State Ministry of Infrastructure, Lands and Housing after 10 years, adding building department in the Ministry was created by his administration in a bid to promote professionalism in the building profession.
