The Ondo State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has arrested seven individuals in connection with illegal mining and pipeline vandalism, as part of its ongoing efforts to tackle economic sabotage and criminal activities across the state.
The arrests, which occurred in the first quarter of 2025, are part of the 135 criminal cases recorded by the command between January and March, according to statistics released by the NSCDC Public Relations Office.
At a briefing held at the state headquarters in Akure, the State Commandant of the NSCDC, Oluyemi Ibiloye, emphasised the command’s unwavering commitment to combating criminality, particularly those targeting the state’s oil and gas infrastructure.
“In the first quarter, we apprehended seven individuals for illegal mining and pipeline vandalism. This is in addition to the 15 suspects arrested for obtaining money under false pretences and another 13 detained for various theft-related offences,” Ibiloye revealed.
He further disclosed that the command had escalated its efforts to tackle oil theft and illegal refining, citing a successful joint operation with Tantita Security Services and the Nigerian Army in Elaje.
“We successfully dismantled an illegal oil refining site hidden deep within the teak forest of Elaje. This operation was a significant breakthrough and received extensive media coverage,” Ibiloye stated.
The commandant also addressed the concerning rise in kidnappings in the state, confirming the detention of two suspects linked to kidnapping incidents during the period under review.
“While the suspects are not the direct perpetrators, intelligence suggests they are associates of a kidnapper who infiltrated from Kogi State. Our command is working in collaboration with other security agencies to tackle this issue head-on,” he added.
In response to concerns over the activities of private security firms, Ibiloye assured that illegal operators were being closely monitored.
“Based on our assessments, the activities of illegal private security firms are minimal. However, our Private Guard Unit is actively overseeing compliance and ensuring professionalism in the sector,” he remarked.
Ibiloye reiterated the NSCDC’s resolve to work in partnership with other security agencies to combat criminal elements and ensure the safety of lives and property in Ondo State.
“The challenges we face are considerable, but we remain determined. We will continue to collaborate, enforce, and ensure that Ondo State remains safe for all,” he concluded.
