Ondo NYSC Coordinator charges Corps members on skills acquisition

dispels preferential treatment rumour

The State Coordinator of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Ondo State, Mrs Kuburat Omowumi Bakare, has urged corps members to strive for greatness by embracing the Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) programme. She emphasised that the world is eager to witness their success.

Speaking at the flag-off ceremony of SAED activities for the 2024 Batch ‘C’ (Stream II) corps members in Ondo State, including those dislodged from Lagos State, Mrs Bakare highlighted the importance of acquiring skills alongside academic qualifications. She noted that the rising unemployment rate, as reported by the Bureau of Statistics, prompted the NYSC to establish the SAED programme 13 years ago as an intervention to address youth unemployment.

“Several millions of Nigerians who have passed through the Scheme are now captains of industries and entrepreneurs of international repute,” Mrs Bakare stated, encouraging corps members to seize the opportunity to develop skills that align with their passions. She urged them to take full advantage of the in-camp training and follow through with the post-camp sessions, which would refine their expertise during their service year.

Pastor (Mrs) Jennifer Funmilola Dawodu, the Assistant Director and Head of SAED, also appealed to corps members to engage actively in the programme, avoiding complacency. She commended the camp management and facilitators for their dedication to nurturing the potential of graduate youths.

Pastor Dawodu outlined the benefits of the SAED programme, which include access to grants, loans, funding opportunities, and technical assistance for job searches.

The Trainers and Facilitators, who are experts in their fields, introduced a variety of skill areas available to corps members. These included Agro-Allied, ICT, Creative Industry, Culinary and Catering Services, Construction, Green Energy, Satellite Security Technology, Cleaning Services, Cosmetology, Education, Automobile, and Delivery and Logistics.

The event reinforced the NYSC’s commitment to equipping young Nigerians with entrepreneurial skills to enhance their economic prospects.

Earlier, Bakare dispelled the rumour that Corps members deployed to Ondo are having an edge over their colleagues dislodged from Lagos State.

The State Coordinator reiterated that she is responsive and responsible to all the 2024 Batch ‘C’ (Stream II) Corps members having their orientation course at the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp, Ikare-Akoko, regardless of their status.

Bakare, affirmed that her role as the State Coordinator encompasses the provision of adequate security and enhanced welfare for all Corps members serving or passing through the state as a result of NYSC deployment or posting policy.
